Corden quipped, “Tonight is the one night that Hollywood and science come together, other than, of course, that one magical evening when Dr. [Anthony] Fauci had a one-night stand with Dame Judi Dench.” The remark was met with awkward silence and visible shock from attendees, including actress Olivia Wilde. ​

This incident adds to previous controversies surrounding Corden’s comedic choices. In 2017, while hosting the amfAR Gala in Los Angeles, he faced backlash for making jokes about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault allegations. Corden’s remarks were met with audible groans from the audience, and he later apologized, stating his intention was to shame Weinstein, not to offend victims.
